There’s an Old Family Tradition...

Do you have any family traditions that don’t make much sense? Traditions that you simply follow because you always have?

We recently had an enquiry about our HR system. The person shall remain nameless, but I will say that she was extremely happy to have finally found a modern, cloud-based HR system for her business (in fact, her exact words were “Whoppeee!”).

Unfortunately, the excitement was short-lived. You see, her company’s policy meant that they were not allowed to use anything that wasn’t installed on premise – in other words, Cloud systems were banned.

We asked why of course, and got the response “security of confidential information”.

No problem – we get that sort of thing all the time, and we were only too pleased to explain our own data protection procedures. We then asked if there were any other issues preventing them from going ahead… to which we got the reply “no, we just don’t put anything in the Cloud”.

“Right. Well could we not explore how Cloud technologies might actually help your business grow in ways you’ve never thought? After all, almost all major technology products these days are cloud-based and most of the world has moved on from locally-installed systems.”

“No.”

“But…”

“No.”

Now, we know when to stop barking at a dead horse, and even though we knew that this argument against our HR system was probably not the strongest, we left it.

So what is the moral of this story?

Well, the company in question did not walk away with a shiny new HR system, and they are probably still struggling with the same issues as before.

The moral of this story is not that family traditions are bad – they’re great, we all have and love them! But rather, it is that just because you have always done something, does not mean it is necessarily the best thing to do.

Take a moment to think. Are there any old traditions that might be holding the growth of your business back?
