Improve Communication in 30 Minutes

Has somebody ever asked you to “do that thing you promised you’d do earlier”? Well what if you thought ‘that thing’ was ordering takeaway for the entire team… and what if they thought ‘that thing’ was submitting your quarterly report?

Communication between colleagues is hugely important, and so we wanted to share this fun little 30-minute exercise that could help you to improve communication (and it has its ‘teambuilding’ merits, too!)

The Blindfold Game

This exercise is all about boosting verbal communication, and is perfect for small teams – think 12 or less. If you have a large workforce, then you might want to consider splitting people up into smaller groups.

Before you start, you’ll need to make sure you’re all in a clear space free of dangerous obstacles. A field is good for this (as long as it doesn’t contain a bull), but a large empty room works well, too.

Here’s how you play the game:

  1. Give each person a blindfold, and have them put it on. It helps if they are in an unfamiliar environment, or if they spin around a couple of times to make the ‘blind’ effect stronger.
  2. Place a rope on the floor (about 8 – 12 meters should be fine). It doesn’t have to be placed on the floor neatly.
  3. Explain to your team that there is a rope on the floor, and that they must now work together to form a specific shape using the rope (a square or triangle is a good suggestion, or you could try something more complex like a picture of a cow – unless you’re in that field with the bull!).
  4. When the team is satisfied with the end result, let them remove their blindfolds and take a look at the end result.

Keep things positive throughout, and at the end, let your team discuss how they might have produced an even better result. If you have the time, you can even have them try the challenge again using their newly-hatched strategies.
