“Make sure you backup your phone data before removing this app”

“Backup your hard drive then perform a factory reset”

“Backup your data every day to make sure important files don’t get lost”

Do any of these phrases sound familiar? Data backup is one of those terms that gets thrown around all the time, and in many different contexts – your mobile phone, your personal computer, and the databases at your office, to name just a few.

But when your HR software runs in the cloud… do you really need to backup your data? After all, you access the software from your browser – even if your office explodes or your server room sets on fire, everything will still be waiting for you the next time you logon.

There’s no right or wrong answer to this question – and as a general rule, most big cloud computing platforms are almost infinitely more secure than an office server room. But I will say this: Is it going to hurt you to backup your data manually?

Data Centre Disasters

Data Centres (the places where your cloud-based software providers store your data) are not immune to disaster, and even though most Data Centres perform their own frequent backups, it might just pay to be safe.

– In 2010, half of Yahoo’s data centre in Santa Clara was taken down by squirrels

– In 2014, an employee at cloud provider Joyent accidentally rebooted all the company’s remote servers by pressing the wrong button

– Amazon had a fire in its Virginia data centre this year (although no services were taken down as a result)

These specific incidents did not cause the loss of any data – however, would you not prefer to have your own physical copy of your data, just in case? Or is making a physical backup of securely-stored data just a waste of time? Let us know in the comments below.
