Quotes for HR Professionals

Looking for some inspiration to get you through the day? Look no further – here are five of our favourite quotes from some of the brightest minds of modern history.

They all teach us a quick and practical lesson about how we can improve HR for our business. Enjoy!

1. “I hire people brighter than me and then I get out of their way”

This wonderful quote is credited to Lee Iacocca.

Lee is perhaps best known for leading the development of Ford Mustang, and was named by CNBC as the 18th best CEO of all time.

His quote reminds us how important it is to not let our ego get in the way of hiring talented people. It also reminds us that once we’ve hired somebody, we should trust that they have what it takes to do a great job.

2. “Recently, I was asked if I was going to fire an employee who made a mistake that cost the company $600,000. No, I replied, I just spent $600,000 training him. Why would I want somebody to hire his experience?”

We already wrote about this wonderful quote, credited to Thomas Watson Jr., in a previous blog post titled “What would you do if an employee made a $600,000 mistake?”.

Thomas was responsible for growing International Business Machines (IBM) into a formidable brand recognised all over the world.

His quote reminds us that mistakes should be seen as temporary setbacks with long-term benefits.

3. “You’ve achieved success in your field when you don’t know whether what you’re doing is work or play”

This excellent little soundbite is credited to Warren Beatty.

Warren is most famous for his work as an actor and film maker, and during his career he has been nominated for 14 Academy Awards.

His quote should hopefully remind us that work doesn’t have to be dull. If you’re worried that your employees are having too much fun doing their jobs… well, don’t. Would you rather they were sat counting down the minutes until they clock off?

4. “Take our 20 best people away, and I will tell you that Microsoft would become an unimportant company”

This quote is credited to Bill Gates.

Bill is best known for building one of the biggest brands in the world – Microsoft – and recently took the title (again!) of Richest Man in the World.

Let his words remind you that no matter how big your company gets, its success can never be pinned to one person alone. Success is found when many wonderful minds work together. The key word here is teamwork.

5. “True motivation comes from achievement, personal development, job satisfaction, and recognition”

This quote is credited to Frederick Herzberg.

Frederick was a leading psychologist best known for his research in the field of business management and employee motivation.

His quote can help remind us where to focus our efforts, if we’re not sure what to do next. Want motivated employees? Then make sure they are achieving goals, developing their skills, happy at work, and gaining recognition for the results they generate.
