5 Steps to Reduce Absence & Improve Attendance in the Workplace

June 20, 2013

When people don’t show, the work doesn’t show either. And that can cause some very expensive complications…

But even though time and attendance are huge influencers on our balance sheets, a survey conducted by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) in 2010 found that more than 50% of employers do not actually monitor the cost of absence.

If employee absenteeism is such a big drain on our finances, why is it that less than half of us actually take one of the biggest steps in ensuring absence levels are as low as possible?

For some, monitoring the cost of absence can seem difficult, fiddly and even a little daunting… don’t give up yet though! The 5 steps outlined above will help you to put a lid on your absence levels and start monitoring the cost in no time at all.

And of course, once you’ve got your system in place, there are several other methods of tackling absence – such as asking yourself (and answering) the following questions:

  • Why are employees not showing up to work?
  • Is there anything I can do to improve the overall health of my workforce?
  • Is there a way of making the workplace more enjoyable for staff?
