5 Fun Facts About Australia

On 26th January 1778, 11 fleets arrived in Australia under the command of Captain Arthur Phillip. Today, this date is commonly referred to as Australia Day, and is a day when many Australians celebrate the things their ancestors achieved.

Here are 5 fun facts about Australia that you might not have known before:

1. In the 1880s, Melbourne became one of the richest cities in the world thanks to its commercial gold production

2. Before the arrival of humans, Australia is believed to have been the home to several now-extinct species of gigantic animals called “megafauna”

3. Kangaroos cannot walk backwards!

4. The wine cask was invented in Australia

5. Every year, the Annual Australia Day Cockroach Races are hosted in Brisbane – and it’s a surprisingly popular event!
